Building the Scroll Wall: Behind the Scenes of Our Signature Backdrop

Most photo booth backdrops are some variation of the same thing: a telescoping frame, a fabric panel, maybe some sequins. They work. They also look like what they are — rented equipment standing in the corner.

We wanted something that didn't exist. So we built it.

The idea

Picture an unrolled scroll standing on its side: the center bows gently toward the camera, the edges sweep back, and the tips curl into full rolled pillars. A shape with depth, dimension, and presence — something that wraps around your guests instead of standing flat behind them.

That's the Starlux scroll wall: fifteen feet wide, eight feet tall, with a continuous curved profile you won't find in any rental catalog.

Why curves matter in photos

Flat backdrops create flat photos. A curved wall does three things a straight one can't:

  • Depth — the sweep of the curve reads as dimension in every shot, even on a phone screen
  • Soft light wrap — light bounces around the curve instead of falling off at hard edges
  • Framing — the rolled pillars naturally frame groups, pulling eyes toward the people

The engineering (the short version)

The frame is built from EMT conduit — the steel tubing electricians use — bent and joined by custom connectors we design and 3D print in-house. The skin is a four-way stretch spandex cover, tensioned like a pillowcase so the surface photographs perfectly smooth, with no wrinkles and no visible seams.

Designing our own connectors means the geometry is exactly right: the cosine-curve profile, the pillar diameter, the way panels meet. It packs down for transport and assembles on-site before your guests arrive.

Why this matters for your event

When you book a photo booth, the backdrop is in every single frame. Ours is something your guests haven't seen before — and that's the point. The best compliment we get isn't about the booth at all. It's "wait, where did this wall come from?"

The scroll wall is available as a premium backdrop option on select packages. Ask us about it.
